MLA Citing

This is a reminder to cite correctly your reference resources in MLA. Refer to your MLA handout in CONTENT and cite correctly this resource, CQ and Issues & Controversies in your assignments. Most of these efforts to cite an article in Gale Virtual Reference Library in the discussion were incorrect.

Thank you for your continued guidance through this week of the first assignment. I am new to research (college actually)and proper citation. My experience dates back to the reports written through high school (graduated in '72!) and the bibliography at the end. This course is a challenge, but I expect that I will come out of it with much useful knowledge. I did notice, as you commented in an earlier post, that the citations for items found on the three research sites are not always in MLA format. Cut and paste - then ADJUST using the printed handout as a guide.

Hopefully, I posted my citation correctly on discussion board. The article I chose did not state original author, but cited quite a few contributors. I am sure you'll let me know if it's incorrect...but I clearly respect your input. I would like to thank you for posting assignment #1 walk through on main page. I feel really stupid that I was so confused since finding out how act simple the actual process is. I guess I like to make things appear much harder than they actually are.

One of the important points about all this emphasis on correctly citing your resources using MLA,is that students are demonstrating that they are actually LOOKING at the handout and possibly thinking about the differences/variations that may occur in citing a resource. The handout provided in this course is an ADAPTATION of how WE (as library faculty) of what is the best way to cite these resources using MLA. Other MCTC instructors may differ in their interpretations of how to cite these resources and of course follow what they direct. Be flexible. It is not YOU. You are not going crazy. The reason, of course, for citing these resources is to assist a person, who is reading your paper, can locate the resources again. The rationale for NOT including a URL in the subscription reference resources such as CQ and replacing it with the name of the organization subscribing to it (in this case MCTC) is to show your readers that this IS a database that is not free and that yuou will have to have some connection with MCTC in order to view the articles (with a student i.d andp password). If the URL for CQ for examples IS clicked on and a person does not have a connection with MCTC, she will be taken to a login screen for the database itself (not the login for MCTC). The database now assumes the reader has personally subscribed to the databases and has a PRIVATE not an student institution (MCTC) account to the database.

I wish I had taken this class sooner. The MLA citation looked pretty daunting the first time I saw it. I was overwhelmed by the sheer quantity of information available about MLA style and formatting.

For example I have a book called The Bedford Handbook that contains a guide to MLA formatting. The MLA section is more than 100 pages long,(p.586-697)! The official version of MLA is in a 292 page book called "MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers".

Aside from the altered version of MLA that some Professors/Instructors and Librarians recommend, there are also different versions of MLA specification released by the Modern Language Association. The 7th edition is the most up to date. Some text books and websites may feature older editions of MLA, which can cause even more confusion.

I prefer the abbreviated version of MLA citation specified in the MCTC "MLA Citation Guide". Compared with other MLA guides I've encountered this one is fairly straight forward.

Thanks for remind us this because the first I was surprise when I got the cite with article but when I compare with MLA format that Jane posted, it is very different format. I did use mine with the MLA format that was posted in Blog.
Per your conversation early, Please note that Screen capture wasn’t difficult except is only shows first page of article. I hope that you understand why is only first page
