For those students who have had an occasion to locate and use PRINT periodicals (magazine and journals) in the library, may have noticed that these magazines and journals are not classified either in Dewey or in LC. These items are usually arranged by the title of the magazine or journal (A-Z). Why do you think these items are NOT classified??

I assume that classifying print periodicals would be next to impossible. Each issue would encompass a variety of subjects and there wouldn't likely be carryover month to month in the subject matter either. Another reason would be that these are print matter of a more consumable nature, and not intended to become a permanent part of a collection.
I do not know exactly answer but my assumption is that those magazines and journal may be located for using the search engines for example, Google. In the past discussion, we learned that search engines are constructed in a different way from classification system.
i can only say that i absolutely, completely, and unconditionally agree with sandy 100%.

I also agree with Sandy's comment. I could not even imagine how huge a project this would be for a library to convert periodicals over to a classification system, there would have to be so many multiple copies of the same periodical just for the different subject headings it would fall under. I know a lot of periodicals are eventually stored on microfilm and microfiche such as newspapers and gov. documents, but I would like to know if outdated magazines or journals are also kept in this format or just thrown after a certain period.
Perhaps the information contained in these publications goes out of date faster and is less authoratative than the information published in books. Also each newspaper or magazine does cover a range of topics.
I also concur with Sandy. That was the reason I've always heard given regarding the classification of information contained in periodicals.
Yes, I think you have understood how difficult is would be to classify periodicals - I have seen it done at least twice in different academic libraries and it is very difficult for the patron to locate an individual title.
