CONTROLLED VOCABULAY TERMS/SUBJECT HEADINGS

After examining records from the book catalogs such as MnPals you may be looking at (with the exception of Google Books), controlled vocabulary terms/subject headings. You should be identifying and possibly linking off the subjects that are assigned to the books. This is the concept that we have looked at earlier - now here are some resources that have been assigned these headings to determine the subject matter. You should be looking at these to help you determine what the books are all about. These terms are also assigned to you periodical records which you will be looking at this week.

I do not recommend Google Books as your sole book catalog. Compare another book catalog with Google Books and see if you like a more "typical" book catalog like MnPals.

yes, thanks to linking off subjects that are assigned to books, i haven't had to use too many search strings: i begin by entering a broad phrase, then surf the related headings - and this at least helps to refine my search phrases, if not paving a clear path to what i need. but if i'm getting ZERO fruition from this "surf technique", i use boolean operators.
i tried using "Books in Print" for Assignment 3, but was led to believe that you cannot view it's content unless you create an account (?) - in any case i wasn't able to link to it from MNPALS or WORLDCAT, so i ended up using google books, but didn't really like it. limited in scope, not much info; at least not for the Research Topic i'm working on. i kinda get the feeling that it's a relatively new google feature (work in progress).
this course has proven (to me at least) that google, and other free search engines, are good for finding recreational information, but beyond that, they're little more than information warehouses.
