Think OUTSIDE Google...

One of the themes I observed as the discussion on "Boolean" operators proceeded this week is a certain eagerness to apply these terms to search engines. This is fine but there are even more efficient ways to search these search engines instead applying Boolean logic which we will learn about in a future lesson.

Be aware that we will be looking at several different kinds of databases in addition to search engines. Most of these databases also use these operators (with the exception of the reference background sources) with some slight variations. They often they are better choices when you are researching a topic.

Thank you for this post, it made a light bulb come on for me. I had not yet separated search engine from database and vice versa. I am still very tied to my search engine usage, as if that is the source of all knowledge.....it is time to broaden my world.

Its a very easy thing to do, to be very dependent on google, yahoo, etc.. Almost all browsers come with some search engine tied to it, like firefox + google. I remember when web crawler was huge, and people stopped using it because yahoo was quicker to type.

I like the title to the post.

Yeah, it's easy to get hooked on Google. I usually get what I need from it, so I just start to think if it's not in Google search results, then it's not findable.
